The Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security directive issued Tuesday, Jan. 21, to rescind previously issued guidelines for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) enforcement actions that limit law enforcement in or near “sensitive” areas, which include schools and churches.
The Kansas State Department of Education is aware of concerns raised because of the recent announcement that certain policies of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have changed. Specifically, the federal government revoked the directive issued in 2021 that limited conducting immigration enforcement actions in or near protected areas such as schools, hospitals, and places of worship, except in specific limited circumstances. Tuesday’s action did not change the law, nor did it increase the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s authority. To that end, school personnel's ultimate responsibility is the education and protection of all students. All students have a constitutionally protected right to receive an education. USD #371 and USD #476 will continue to follow the law and abide by their board-approved policies regarding investigations and/or arrests on school grounds. I assure school personnel, parents, and the students of USD #371 and USD #476 that our schools will not share any student data without a warrant, subpoena, or other lawfully issued court order.
USD #371 and USD #476 will continue to comply with all state and federal laws protecting student information and student safety.

Patrons,
We are writing to update you regarding the recent cybersecurity incident involving PowerSchool, the software vendor that provides our Student Information System (SIS).
Today, January 30, 2025, PowerSchool initiated the process of notifying individuals whose information was determined to be involved.
As previously mentioned, PowerSchool has engaged Experian, a trusted credit reporting agency, to provide complimentary identity protection and credit monitoring services to current and former students and educators that had information exfiltrated from PowerSchool SIS. PowerSchool is doing this regardless of whether an individual’s Social Security Number was exfiltrated. In the coming weeks, Experian (on behalf of PowerSchool) will be distributing direct email notifications to involved individuals (or their parent/guardian, as applicable) for whom PowerSchool has sufficient contact information.
Additionally, PowerSchool has worked with Experian to set up a dedicated, toll-free call center to answer any questions associated with these offerings and the incident. All the information regarding the activation of and access to these services will be included in the email sent to you by Experian. Whether or not you receive an email, you may also visit PowerSchool’s website to learn how to activate the offering from Experian, linked here: http://www.powerschool.com/security/sis-incident/notice-of-united-states-data-breach/.
Protecting our students and teachers remains our top priority. Thank you again for all of your support and understanding during this time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Zehr

South Gray represented well at the Gray County Spelling Bee this morning. The Gray County Spelling Bee champion is Ava Koehn of Montezuma Elementary and 2nd place goes to Rylee Berg, also representing Montezuma Elementary. Way to go Rebel spellers!

Montezuma and Copeland 4th graders went to the Farm Bureau "Friends on the Farm Day" at the Finney County Fairgrounds on January 24th. The students learned about a swather, a combine, a tractor, corn and sheep. This is a great way to learn more about agriculture that is happening all around us.

Copeland USD 476 is hiring! Contact Mr. Klaker, Principal if you're interested.

POWERSCHOOL DATA BREACH UPDATE:
In the coming days, PowerSchool will begin providing formal legal notice of the cybersecurity incident to current and former students (or their parents / guardians as applicable) and educators whose information was determined to be involved.
A direct email notification will be distributed by Experian on behalf of PowerSchool in the coming weeks to applicable current and former students (or their parents / guardians as applicable) and educators for whom we have sufficient contact information. PowerSchool will also launch a website and distribute a media release to ensure we reach as many involved individuals as possible and provide them with resources to protect their information. Importantly, these notices will include instructions for involved individuals on how to enroll in the credit monitoring and identity protection services that are being offered by PowerSchool.
